“An Introduction to Seasonal Beekeeping” was the theme of our March 31 farmer training program. Thirteen people attended this class. The participants were both future beekeepers or currently had their own hives. Of these participants, there were several youth who have high hopes of starting their own hives.
Darryl Coates of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources led the discussion and provided several informative power point presentations. He focused on creating and maintaining a healthy hive and techniques for successful beekeeping. He brought tools, hive materials and even a beekeepers suit to demonstrate how one actually uses this equipment. A tour of the hives at the Spence Farm was also a highlight of the class.
Participants said that the program was very informative and useful and they also appreciated the opportunity to network with other beekeepers to share ideas about successes and setbacks. Look for another Beekeeping program in the spring of 2013.
