Using the unique historic backdrop of Spence Farm, the Foundation is pioneering the use, appreciation, and support of historic and new sustainable farming methods. Spence Farm’s 160 acres serve as a living, teaching laboratory to schoolchildren, new farmers, families, and others wanting to learn more about their food, the land, and the history of farming.
Spence Farm is operated as a private farm by Marty, Kris and Will Travis, and is the oldest farm in Livingston County. They have generously donated the use of some of the buildings and land for the Foundation’s use and make the living workings of their historic farm available for the Foundation’s teaching, training, and tours. Spence Farm Foundation’s programs are geared towards both the public and beginning or transitioning farmers.
The Foundation collaborates with other organizations such as The Land Connection, University of Illinois Extension, and Central Illinois Sustainable Farming Network to provide free training to beginning farmer program participants, such as members of Stewards of the Land and students of Farm Beginnings.
