About Spence Farm Foundation

With a mind towards developing a niche for the sustainable grower, we have developed the following programs:

High School Agriculture Connection

To increase exposure to a variety of farming practices, we have partnered with our local High School to invest in agricultural education. We purchased a hoop house which can be used to grow food in year round. We hope to cultivate the sustainable farmers of our future with this and other future projects.

Small Farm Development Initiative

In order to foster opportunity for the sustainable grower, we have developed continuing education courses. Current topics offered include: using traditional equipment, bee keeping, soil amendments, cover crops and pasturing livestock.

Culinary Arts Courses

In the interest of supporting the emerging trend of using sustainably grown food, we developed a course for chefs to experience first-hand where their food comes from, how it is used in cooking, and how to provide economic opportunity to growers that make this food available.

Thinking about our farm heritage and fostering sustainable lifestyles, we offer the following programs:

Elementary School Partnership

Our 2nd and 5th grade partnerships emphasize sustainable living, conserving resources, and rural traditions. We offer a hands-on interpretive activities which enrich the subjects that instructors are teaching in the classroom. We also look to offer programs to students who live in cities with little exposure to where food comes from and our farming legacy.

Our Farm Heritage Series

Looking into the past to shape out future, we have created programs which connect communities to sustainable farming and a rural lifestyle. Current events include: sustainable agriculture, self sufficiency, traditional trades and crafts, prairie restoration, and historical reenactment.

Community Garden Program

This program will consist of a comprehensive educational outreach, from garden planning and planting to food preservation and use in cooking: the kind of food even kids will enjoy!
